Field sensor network for crop monitoring

An agriculture startup needed low cost, low power sensors that stayed reliable in the field. We built the hardware, the firmware, and the dashboard behind them.

The problem

The startup wanted to give farmers live soil and weather readings, but the field is a hard place for electronics. Power is scarce, mobile coverage is patchy, and a sensor that drops readings or dies after a month is worse than useless.

What we built

We designed sensor nodes around a low power microcontroller that take readings on a schedule, buffer them locally when the network is down, and sync as soon as a connection returns. The readings feed a dashboard where the field team can watch conditions and get alerts when something needs attention.

The nodes are built to run for months on a single charge, so they can be left in place across a growing season.

Techniques

The work spanned hardware and software: careful power management and deep sleep on the device, a store and forward design so nothing is lost during outages, and a lightweight messaging protocol suited to weak networks. On the cloud side we set up a time series store and a dashboard with alerting.
